We’re still working on our new course and have another brief video post this week. This time, I thought I’d share a sample ASMR style. In this short, I’m cutting the leather for the project. I use an upright knife, which we cover in Refining Your Technique. In our new course, I’ll show you additional cutting styles intended for beginners who are trying out leatherworking.
Scenes From the Studio (SFS)
Scenes From The Studio is a series of short posts of photos and videos from the day-to-day happenings in our studio. It includes works-in-progress, snapshots from our classes, and, of course, leatherworking.

I Find using a square and a radius guide would make a cleaner more defined cut. yes scribe the pattern
Thanks for watching, William! We hope to cover this particular topic more in an upcoming blog post. Keep an eye on your inbox.
Hey I just wanted to say that there’s so much information out there on leather work and your blog really cuts through the noise. The writing is efficient and easy to understand, the photos are great and importantly illustrative and have been a big help. Take it from someone who’s worked their whole lives in magazines, you’re doing great so please keep it up for the benefit of this community.
I really glad you find the blog helpful, Greg! Feedback like yours is what keeps us going. Thank you.
I Find using a square and a radius guide would make a cleaner more defined cut. yes scribe the pattern but I would have used shears to cut out the piece . Making rounded corners is much cleaner with shears as well as streight lines, I have been a leather crafter for 55 years
Yes, there are other ways to cut this. This excerpt from a beginner’s course, where the student might not have a square, a guide, or shears. Their knife might be the first knife they own!
If you do this for a living, every advantage helps, especially if it makes the work faster without sacrificing quality. In making our new course, I wanted to see how much I could take away from my tool set and still get a great result.
