We’re busy working on shooting video for our next course. So today is a short post highlighting our studio’s splitter. A leather band knife splitter thins a piece of leather. In this case, I’m taking pieces that are ~1.8mm thick and reducing them to 1.4mm. This might not seem like a lot, but the thicknesses can add up quickly when you’re stacking pieces together, like for a wallet.
I really lucked out finding a splitter several years ago. It is a massive machine requiring 3-phase power and sturdy floors. It’s very old and rather stubborn, but with some coaxing and a lot of learning (on my part), it splits leather very nicely. Today’s Scenes from the Studio shows the leather splitter in action.
As I’ve been working on this new course, I’ve been reminded how hard it was and is to learn how to use this machine. Like any new skill, mastering it takes time, experimentation, and good advice.
Tried to watch video. Asked me 3 times to verify I’m human, then said video could not be found.
Sorry about that, I fixed it. The link in the newsletter wasn’t working. So if you clicked on the video from there, it wouldn’t work.
